  • How do I use mobile data while roaming?

With roaming service, you can be abroad and use data on your mobile phone as you would in Portugal. You can check your email, browse the internet, use apps, and much more.
You should check whether this feature is enabled on your device. To do so, go toGeneral Settings > Network > Data Roaming > Enable*.

If you have an internet data-sharing card, you can use it abroad; the data you use will be billed according to your roaming plan.

To avoid incurring costs for software updates, we suggest that you check your mobile phone to see if updates are set to download only over Wi-Fi:
    • Android*: General Settings > Device Information > Software Update > More options > Automatic Update.
    • Apple: Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

You can also purchase roaming packages through themy UZO app.

(*) There may be slight variations depending on the device model and operating system version. If in doubt, check the information in the device manual or on the manufacturer’s website.

  • Control data costs and other roaming communications

To control consumption, we offer the data roaming control service. It is an automatic service (no need to activate), which allows you to receive warning messages on mobile phone when the expenses reach a certain amount.

The monthly limit set for all customers is €50 + VAT (standard regulatory amount).

    My UZO App

    • Select the "Services" optionfromthe app menu
    • Select the mobile phone
    • Select theRoamingoptionin theFEATURES section
    • Next, selectManage data roaming
    • Select theCHANGE DATA LIMIT option
    • Enter the limit value and select CONFIRM LIMIT CHANGE

You can also change it in the " customer my UZO > selectService >underDATA WHILE ROAMING, selectCHANGE DATA LIMIT >enter thevalue >CONFIRM.

    This service works as follows:

    • When the monthly limit is about to run out, a warning message is sent to the mobile phone
    • When the expenses reach the defined amount, another warning message is sent and, for security reasons, we suspend access to the data roaming service until the 1st of the following month. This warning message also includes information on what to do to continue using the service until the end of the month, you will need to send a message to 12 083 with the word DATA (if your limit is 50€+VAT) or UNLIMITED (if your limit is other than 50€+VAT).
    • By regulatory imposition, if your limit is the standard value (50€+VAT) and you ask to continue browsing after exhausting that value, the service will be suspended again when it reaches 100€+VAT. You will be notified by message to your mobile phone when you are running out and when you reach this value, with information on what to do to continue using the service until the end of the month after reaching 100€+VAT (you will have to send a message to 12083 with the word UNLIMITED).

You can turn off the data roaming control service at my UZO app.

For example, if you are abroad and want to call the number 960 000 000, dial: +351 960 000 000. To call a mobile phone that is abroad, follow the same procedure. It is as if you were calling Portugal.

    See theinternational dialing codes.

    Receiving calls while roaming
    • Voice calls and multimedia messages (MMS) received while roaming are billed according to thebase roaming rate forthe respective zones.
    • Anyone who wants to call or send you a message can dial your number as usual and pay the same rate as if they were in Portugal. If you don’t answer or your mobile phone is mobile phone , a voicemail message can be left—as long as your voicemail service is active. Receiving voicemail messages while abroad incurs a charge.

    Accessing voicemail while roaming
Checking your voicemail while roaming is not free, as it is in Portugal, because it counts as a call made to Portugal. Within the EEA, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom, it counts toward your data allowance; or, if you don’t have minutes included in your plan, you’ll be charged the rate for a call to other national networks.
In the rest of the world, this call will be charged at the rate for a call to Portugal, according to theroaming rate plan.

Please note: Each voicemail message you receive costs the same as two international calls, with the exception of Zone 1 (European Economic Area, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom), where the service is free: one charge corresponds to the call being routed from the UZO switch to the operator in the country where you are located (incoming call while roaming), and the other corresponds to the call being forwarded to Voice Mail (call made to Portugal).

To access your voicemail while roaming, dial 200 or +351 60 followed by your mobile phone number mobile phone press the call button.
To listen to your voicemail message, dial * and follow thevoice prompts, which will ask you for your personal access code followed by # (unless you have changed it, your personal access code is the same as your SIM card’s original PIN). As a last resort (if all other options fail), dial +351 96 2000000 and follow the voice prompts, which will ask you for your mobile phone number mobile phone by your personal access code.

To turn off voicemailwhen you're abroad, there are several ways to do this before you travel. You can do it through your mobile phone menus mobile phone by dialing one of these codes:

  • What happens when I'm in a border area and my mobile phone foreign networks?

In certain regions near the borders of Zone 1 countries (the European Economic Area, Ukraine, Moldova, and the United Kingdom), your mobile phone data device may, without you realizing it, connect to a network in a country belonging to a different zone, where the terms and conditions that apply in Portugal do not apply.

Andorra, Monaco, and Switzerland are not members of the European Economic Area. In these countries, the basic roaming ratewill apply, depending on the zone to which the respective countries belong, unless you choose to activate a roaming package for these destinations.

To avoid unwanted roaming charges, follow these steps:
1.Check if roaming is enabled. Here are a few quick ways to do that:
       a. Check if you received a text your carrier informing you that you are roaming
       b. Check the name of the carrier displayed in the upper corner of the mobile phone screen.

    2. Smanually select the network
    • Android*: Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network > Carrier > To select manual network search, you must toggle the switch to disable the feature > Tap “OK” to enable manual search > Select the desired carrier > Press the Home button to return to the home screen.
    • iOS*: Menu > Settings > Cellular > Network Selection > Turn off “Automatic” > Select the desired carrier > Press the Home button to return to the home screen.

    3. Alternatively, you can also temporarily disable the Roaming service in the my UZO app or my UZO website, orby calling 12 083 (Portugal) or +351 961 000 083 (from abroad); the call is free.

(*) There may be slight variations depending on the device model and operating system version. If in doubt, check the information in the device manual or on the manufacturer’s website.
  • Roaming technologies and speeds in the European Economic Area

MEO must provide customers with habitual residence or stable links to the national territory, the roaming service in the European Economic Area at domestic tariff prices and under conditions that are no less favorable than those offered in the domestic market, if the same generation of mobile communications networks, technologies and speeds are available in the visited network.

With regard to the use of the data service (both for the purposes of browsing web pages and using content, applications or services), the values indicated below do not constitute minimum levels of quality of service, since the download and upload speeds at any given time depend on multiple factors, including: the speeds supported by the terminal equipment used; the amount of traffic being coursed in the area where the service is used; the coverage and topography in that area or location; use inside buildings; the number of simultaneous users; increased latency resulting from the distance between countries; the number of applications simultaneously running on the user's terminal equipment (firewall, antivirus, peer-to-peer applications, other sessions or applications competing with the internet session, etc.); the operating system and hardware and/or software configuration of the user's terminal equipment; the characteristics of the servers used and the capacity of the networks connecting these servers to the Internet; the capacity and/or availability of the roaming partners' networks and the international transit networks used, as well as the QoS control policies applied by these networks, which may result in the degradation of the roaming service, among other factors beyond MEO's control.

Estimating the maximum speed of Internet access (in Mbps) when roaming and using mobile technology also depends on the factors listed above at any given time.

For more information about internet speeds, please refer to the Influencers Terms of Use.
